Let’s be honest: in Stockport, our gardens and driveways have a lot to contend with. Between the Manchester rain (it’s a feature, not a bug, right?), the sloping hills of areas like Heaton Moor, and the desire to actually enjoy our outdoor space without a pair of wellies, getting your paving right isn't just about picking a pretty stone. It’s about building something that lasts.

At DW Landscaping Solutions, we’ve been getting our hands dirty across Stockport for over 25 years. We’ve seen it all: from "bargain" patios that turned into swimming pools after the first downpour, to driveways that started sinking faster than a digestive in a hot brew.

You’d be right in thinking that a professional finish requires more than just a shovel and a bit of luck. It takes proper planning, the right materials, and a bit of technical know-how. If you're looking for the cheapest quote in town, we might not be your first port of call. But if you want a finish that leaves you feeling chuffed every time you look out the window, you’re in the right place.

Choosing Your Material: The Good, The Bad, and The Beautiful

Selecting your paving material is the first big decision. It’s where your "dream garden" vision meets the reality of your budget and maintenance levels. In our neck of the woods, three main contenders usually come up in the chat.

1. Porcelain: The Modern Powerhouse

If you want a low-maintenance life, porcelain paving is the way to go. These aren’t your nan’s bathroom tiles; we’re talking thick, textured slabs designed for the outdoors.

  • The Pro: They’re non-porous. This means algae, moss, and the odd spilled glass of red wine won’t soak in. They’re frost-resistant and stay looking "as new" for years with just a quick mop.
  • The Catch: They’re more expensive upfront and need a "proper" specialist to lay them. Because they don't absorb water, they need a specific primer (an SBR slurry) on the back to make sure they actually stick to the mortar bed. Skip this, and they’ll be popping off within a year.

2. Indian Sandstone: The Natural Classic

There’s something about the riven texture and natural colour variations of Indian stone that just fits the character of Stockport’s red-brick homes.

  • The Pro: Every slab is unique. It’s a bit cheaper than porcelain and has a timeless, traditional feel.
  • The Catch: It is porous. If you’ve got a shaded garden in Didsbury or Hazel Grove, it will go green with algae if you don’t seal it and give it a yearly clean.

3. Block Paving: The Driveway King

When it comes to driveway landscaping, block paving is hard to beat for durability and load-bearing.

  • The Pro: If a block gets stained by oil or a heavy van causes a dip, you can just lift and replace the individual blocks. Fab for long-term repairs.
  • The Catch: Weeds love the sand joints. You’ll need to stay on top of the weeding or use a high-quality jointing sand to keep them at bay.

The Technical Bit: Drainage and Foundations (And Why You Can't Ignore Them)

Now, let’s talk about the stuff that isn't sexy but is absolutely vital: what’s underneath the stone.

In the UK: and specifically in our rainy corner of the North West: drainage isn't optional. Since 2008, regulations known as SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) mean that if you're paving over your front garden, you have to ensure the water isn't just running off into the public road and overloading the sewers.

Why Your Driveway Needs a "Plan"

If your driveway is more than 5 square metres, you generally need to use a permeable surface (where water can soak through) or have a system in place to direct water to a lawn or a soakaway within your own land. If you ignore this, you could face a hefty fine or find it impossible to sell your house later.

We take this seriously. We don't just "whack down" some blocks. We calculate falls and install proper slot drains (those thin, discreet metal grates) to make sure your house stays dry and the council stays happy. (And look good doing it, too!)

The Sub-Base: Don't Skimp on the Hardcore

A patio is only as good as the ground it sits on. We use a minimum of 100mm–150mm of compacted MOT Type 1 hardcore. If anyone tells you they can lay slabs directly onto sand or soil, thank them for their time and walk away. Without a solid, well-compacted sub-base, your beautiful new patio will be uneven and cracked by next Christmas.

The DW Way: What a Professional Installation Looks Like

When we take on a paving project in Stockport, we manage the whole journey. We aren't a "man-and-a-van" setup that disappears halfway through.

  1. Consultation: We sit down and chat about how you actually use the space. Need a spot for the BBQ? A path for the kids’ bikes? We tailor the design to you.
  2. The Dig Out: We clear the area to the correct depth. This often involves more soil removal than people expect (we handle the skips and the mess!).
  3. The Foundation: We lay and compact the sub-base, ensuring we have the correct "fall" (a slight slope) so water moves away from your house.
  4. The Laying: We use a full wet mortar bed. No "spot-bedding" (the infamous five-dots-of-mortar technique). Spot-bedding creates voids under the slabs where water sits, freezes, and eventually cracks the stone. A full bed ensures a rock-solid finish.
  5. Pointing/Grouting: Whether it's a modern brush-in compound or a traditional resin, we finish the joints so they’re weed-resistant and look sharp.

Proudly Serving Stockport and Beyond

We’re a local firm, through and through. We know the ground conditions in Heaton Mersey and the access challenges of the terraced streets in Reddish or Dane Bank. Whether you're after a cosy retreat garden or a vibrant entertaining space for the whole family, we treat every project like it’s our own backyard.

We understand that a new driveway or patio is a big investment. It’s why we focus on quality materials and meticulous attention to detail. We want you to be "chuffed" with the result: not just for a week, but for the next 20 years.
